How to check GST registration and ARN status

After filing REG-01 you get an Application Reference Number (ARN). The GST portal lets you track that ARN without logging in, and also verify any GSTIN before you accept an invoice or claim input tax credit.

What it is

ARN tracking shows where your registration application currently sits with the officer.

GSTIN search shows the legal name, trade name, registration date, constitution, jurisdiction and current status of any taxpayer.

Both are free and available without a login.

Who it applies to

  • Anyone with an ARN can track it; anyone can verify a GSTIN.

Documents required

  • •ARN received on submitting REG-01, or the 15-digit GSTIN

Step-by-step process

  1. 1

    Open the GST portal

Go to gst.gov.in and choose Services → Registration → Track Application Status.

  2. 2

Select the module and enter the ARN

Choose Registration as the module and enter the ARN exactly as received on email or SMS.

  3. 3

    Read the status

Pending for Processing means the officer has not yet opened it; Pending for Clarification means a REG-03 notice has been raised and you must reply in REG-04 within 7 working days.

  4. 4

    Verify an existing GSTIN

For counterparty checks use Search Taxpayer → Search by GSTIN/UIN and confirm the legal name matches the invoice.

  5. 5

    Download the certificate

Once approved, log in and download REG-06 from Services → User Services → View/Download Certificates. It must be displayed at the place of business.

Fees and timeline

Government fees

No government fee for GST registration or for status checking.

Typical timeline

Registration is normally granted within 7 working days of the ARN, or 30 days where physical verification of premises is ordered.

Common mistakes and rejection reasons

  • Not replying to a REG-03 clarification notice within 7 working days — the application is rejected automatically.
  • Principal place of business photograph blurred or not showing the signboard.
  • Rent agreement not signed, or no owner's NOC and electricity bill attached.
  • Aadhaar authentication of the authorised signatory skipped, which forces mandatory physical verification.
