Overview
The Employees' State Insurance Act applies to establishments with ten or more employees (twenty in some states) where employees earn up to ₹21,000 per month. It provides medical, sickness, maternity and disability benefits funded by employer and employee contributions. Who pays the ESI contribution?
The employer contributes 3.25% and the employee 0.75% of gross wages, deposited by the employer.
Do exempted employees still count?
Employees above the wage ceiling count towards the headcount threshold but do not contribute.
